Contribute to the expertise of Health Services through focal point roles, team or project roles as assigned.

In addition to the nursing role; implements, executes tasks and maintains a proactive Plant specific program to achieve plant EH&S goals and objectives within the scope of this role. The Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) maintains EH&S Programs such as Hearing Conservation, Respiratory Protection, Ergonomics, and OSHA medical surveillance program. Procedures and databases are maintained and updated as required. The Occupational Health Nurse is jointly accountable to the Site Leader/Responsible Care Leader and EH&S Specialist.

This job role is full-time, 40 hours per week with a flexible work schedule and responsibility for both Health Services and Medical Technician at the Harbor Beach site. Occupational Health Nurse will generally provide initial Health Services on-call support as available at their site for after-hours medical emergencies.

OHN PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

CLINICAL CARE ROLE:

Provide nursing assessment and interventions. Assessment includes obtaining a complete history, performing a physical assessment noting deviations from the norm, ordering medical testing and making a nursing assessment. Interventions include selecting, administering or ordering medications, physical therapy, specialist consultations and recommending medical limitations or restrictions to activity, all within the Clinical Guidelines approved by the site physician.

Evaluate employees with work-related injuries and illnesses and/or personal medical conditions for their fitness for duty. This includes obtaining and reviewing Dow/DAS and external health and position information, completing a medical history and performing any needed physical assessments in order to define the appropriate work placement for the employee’s medical status.

The occupational health nurse coordinates with EHS to provide Health Services consultation for emergency response and training for the site emergency teams.

Provide travel health counseling and services for Dow business travelers. This includes counseling on specific health concerns based on the traveler’s itinerary and providing or arranging the recommended immunizations, medications or other interventions needed.

CASE MANAGEMENT ROLE:

Provide Case Management services, as defined in the Health Services Operating Discipline, for work related cases and for identified personal cases. Case management includes obtaining and reviewing health and position information on a case, developing a specific plan for returning the employee to the highest level of job capability given the medical condition and then monitoring, tracking and communicating progress.

Coordinates Workman’s Compensation reporting and coordination of medical care in compliance with state Workman’s Compensation Laws.

Medical Review Board (MRB) Participation. An MRB may be requested by the Occupational Health Nurse to address complex or difficult medical, job or personal issues complicating the management of a case. (MRB’s may also be called by HR, Legal or Supervision.) The nurse will then contribute Health Services expertise to the MRB as it develops a strategy and will implement the specific steps identified for Health Services by that strategy.

hHEALTH ASSESSMENT PROGRAM ROLE:

Develop the specific Health Assessment Program plan for assigned employee groups, using the Health Services Operating Discipline. This includes evaluating plant or department chemical and physical agent hazards, exposure information and regulatory and Dow standards to determine the specific testing and frequency needed for employees in the group.

Provide Health Assessment services. This includes completing required physical assessments of employees noting deviations from the norm and performing other selected tests as needed at the site.

Provide Health Assessment employee review. This includes reviewing the results of the history, physical examination, functional and laboratory testing and determining the need for follow-up or work place restrictions, all within the Clinical Guidelines approved by the site physician. These determinations are communicated to the employee in person or in writing. Determinations of the employee’s fitness for work are communicated to management.

Create Health Assessment Program Plant Health Report. This requires the aggregation of Health Assessment information for all employees in a plant or department. This information is reviewed to determine if any occupationally related health concerns or trends are noted for the group and also to assess the general preventive health status of the group. A formal report of the conclusions is prepared and sent to supervision and Delivery. If needed, additional interventions including potential follow-up studies will be developed. The Plant Health report may be communicated to employees in writing or by presentations.

Provide Preventive Health Services. The Occupational Health Nurse provides health promotion and disease prevention strategies using primary, secondary and tertiary prevention principles. This role is met through individual employee counseling, participation in Plant Health Risk review and audits and through health education and training programs offered to employees using adult learning approaches.

HEALTH SERVICES EXPERTISE CENTER FUNCTION:

Participate in the development and implementation of Health Services programs and plans as assigned. Nurses will participate in or lead a variety of projects, teams and focal point roles either locally or globally that develop and implement Health Services Operating Discipline, Health Services goals, new programs or research related to important Dow occupational or environment health concerns.

EH&S PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES:

MEDICAL TECHNICIAN ROLE:

Responsibilities:

- The manager will be responsible for supervising teams of people working within the Pacific Northwest orchard and packhouse environments and within the AgroFresh laboratory.
- A major area of responsibility for the manager is to plan and schedule employee’s work time to achieve harvest and subsequent fruit quality analysis in an efficient manner for rapid data feedback in research and commercial projects.
- A primary function of the lab manger will be to help develop and lead projects focused in the area of advanced storage technologies. Leadership in new system development and testing will be required.
- A primary function of the lab manager includes safety training of the proper procedures for safe work conditions and safe operation of equipment both within the lab and in the field. The safety function is a dynamic process that requires constant evaluation of practices and situations so that accidents are prevented. The safety performance and communication of the salient aspects to lab and field personnel is a function that will be a major consideration in performance reviews.
- The lab manager will be responsible for the completion of testing fruit for various quality factors. This function will require knowledge of the operation of various lab equipment and instruments including but not limited to: fruit texture analyzer, acid titrator, color meter, refractometer, juice extractor, fume hood and gas chromatographs.
- Many of the lab procedures involve the collection of data via computers that operate with custom software or with standard Microsoft software such as Excel and Access. A good understanding of these software programs is required. In addition a basic understanding of computer networking is essential.
